Regardless of how much time you spend on your phone, whether you are going out of the country with it every other week or even just once or twice every year, saving money in making international calls is important. Here are some of the things that you need to do in order to make cheap international calls regardless of where you are in the world.
The most obvious and probably the most efficient advice when it comes to availing cheap international calls is for you to consider first if it is really necessary to make a phone call. Think of what exactly you are going to say during your call. Is it going to be long? Does it have to do with something extremely significant that it needs to be transmitted through a call?
Sending a roaming text, rather than calling, is much cheaper than a phone call that lasts for one minute. However, there is a chance that you might need to send multiple texts in order to fully transmit your message, although it is still a cheaper choice than calling. In addition, using pay phones for local phone calls and buying calling cards for international calls can save you a lot of money.
If it is not necessary for you to use your phone when you are abroad, set your phone in order to divert any calls it may receive to voicemail. If you do not do this and someone tries to call you and has that call go to voicemail because you were unable to answer it, you will still pay for the voicemail as if you answered the call in the first place.
If it is absolutely important for you not to lose contact with people from your country of origin, deactivate the divert of any of your mobile voicemail. Therefore, whenever someone calls you, you will be given the choice to answer or not, but regardless, the caller will not be diverted to voicemail, making it impossible to be charged for a voicemail message left by the caller.
If it is possible, only check your voicemail when you get home. Remember that listening to a voicemail costs the same as making an international call.
Another method of international calling is by buying a local PAYG SIM card. A country’s local PAYG, or Pay As You Go SIM card, will make landline calls much cheaper, and will even allow you to make cheap international calls or receive them without costing too much. However, before you decide to buy a card, check the rules in that country regarding the prices of international calls, or whether they would allow local SIM cards to accept calls from outside the country.
Another way of making cheap international calls is by buying a mobile roaming bundle or add-on, especially if you frequently leave the country and you use your phone to make international calls. Roaming add-ons or bundles can decrease the cost of your calls by as much as ten to ninety percent, depending on the mobile network and on the place where you are going. Before buying an add-on, think first of whether it is well-justified for you to avail of one considering how many calls you make.
